Gardens Consultant to The National Trust

From 2015 to 2025, Patrick served as a consultant and adviser to the National Trust in Wales, overseeing all designed gardens and landscapes in its ownership. Most of these are Grade I registered by Cadw (the Welsh historic environment service), and the organisation is obliged to conserve them to the highest standard. Patrick led this work for the National Trust, liaising with regulatory bodies as required, and notably delivered on the following projects:

A world-famous garden, home to National Collections and Champion Trees.


  • Patrick was a key member of the team that produced the Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for this garden in 2019, which concluded that the landscape is of international significance.


  • Led the recruitment of a new Head Gardener during a challenging period for the property in 2020, securing a leading Rhododendron expert for the role.


  • Developed the team structure to deliver the recommendations of the CMP and support recovery following the devastation caused by Storm Arwen.

  • Patrick led the team that produced the Conservation Management Plan for Powis Castle in 2018.

An Edwardian garden in restoration with an ever-changing seasonal landscape.


  • Patrick was consultant to the property and regional team for the revival of one of the largest surviving gardens designed by Thomas Mawson in the UK.

  • Advised on a complex and diverse landscape of national significance, notable for both its design and its important living plant collections.

  • Supported a long-term programme covering horticulture, visitor infrastructure and visitor engagement.

  • Contributed to significant improvements in visitor numbers, visitor satisfaction and the site's ability to support organisational objectives.

  • Patrick worked as a key member of the team delivering a wide-ranging options appraisal for the future management of the lakes and designed landscape at this Grade I registered site.

  • A significant strand of the work focused on climate change impacts and adaptation strategies for historic landscapes.
